Speckle Pop Socks

The Speckle Pop Socks are knit from the top down and in the round. The cuff is worked in 1×1 rib with a subtle picot edge. Knit double depth in a contrast colour, the ribbed cuff is folded to the inside of the sock and secured to help provide structure and prevent them from slipping down. To improve the fit further, work the optional short row cuff shaping to add height to the back on the sock. The heel is an eye of partridge heel flap and gusset and is worked directly after the rib. The main colour and lace pattern is introduced for the gusset and foot. The delicate eyelet lace design is worked on the instep whilst the sole is knit in stockinette stitch. The sock is then finished with a traditional wedge toe, once again in the contrast colour.

Small (Medium, Large)

Size labels provide a rough guide only, I strongly recommend choosing a size based on the actual foot circumference and intended amount of negative ease rather than relying on the size labels alone.

Approximately 1” (2.5cm) of negative ease is recommended. Therefore, pick a size around 1” (2.5cm) smaller than the actual foot circumference. Size labels provide a rough guide only, choose a size based on the actual foot circumference and intended amount of negative ease.

Yarn Requirements

The first sample sock is the Medium size worn with the recommended 1” (2.5cm) negative ease and shows the standard double depth cuff. Knit in hand dyed yarn from Otter and Papoose Yarn, a Superwash Merino/Nylon base in the sock set colourway named ‘Dandelion’. The second sample is knit in the same base from Stripey Cat Yarns; colourway named ‘Luna Speckled’. This sample shows the optional shaped double depth cuff.

Suggested Yarns

Any fingering/sock weight yarn with approximately 425m (465yds) per 100g + contrasting coloured yarn in the same base.

Required meterage (yardage)

Small (Medium, Large).
Main colour (MC): 155 (175, 225) m / 170 (191, 246) yds.
This equates to 1 (1, 1) skein of 4ply sock weight yarn with approximately 425m (465yds) per 100g.
Contrast colour (CC): 85 (94, 102) m / 93 (103, 112) yds.

NOTE! The double thickness cuff requires more yarn than a single thickness cuff which means that a standard 20g mini skein may not be enough for the contrast colour.

*Required meterage (yardage) is based on the specified gauge and recommended yarn, plus extra for swatching and allowing for a longer than average foot length. Making the cuff, leg or foot longer than instructed may require more yarn.

Gauge

32 stitches and 40 rounds = 4×4” (10x10cm) in stocking stitch, blocked. Swatching in the round is recommended.

Needles

The instructions are intended to be ‘needle type neutral’ so work whether you are using Magic loop, a small ‘sock’ circular needle or DPN’s. For the cuff, a marker is used to mark the beginning/end of the round and the stitches can be distributed on the needles as you wish. If working the optional shaped cuff, an additional marker is used to mark the half way point of the stitch count, separating the front and back stitches. For the gusset, foot and toe, 2 markers are used to separate the sole and instep stitches. Unless you choose to distribute the stitches differently, if using Magic loop, this corresponds to the start of needle 1 and the start of needle 2. For DPN’s, the start of needle 1 and the start of needle 3.

2.25mm (US size 1) OR size needed to obtain gauge. DPN’s or long circular needle if using the Magic loop method.

A short circular e.g. 9” (23cm) needle may be used for the cuff, gusset and foot of the sock but I recommend DPN’s or Magic loop for the heel and toe.

Notions

2 locking stitch markers.

Required Techniques

Long tail cast-on method (or preferred stretchy cast on method for socks).

Knitting in the round.

Simple lace knitting.

German Short Rows if working the optional shaped cuff.
